About the Teams We Host
Every season, Peninsula Minor Hockey operates teams in six age divisions. From youngest to oldest, these are: Initiation (U7), Novice (U9), Atom (U11), Pee Wee (U13), Bantam (U15) and Midget (U18). If registration numbers support a Juvenile team (older than Midget (U21)), PMHA may also host a team at that level.
All teams at the U7, U9, and U11 and U11 Development level are considered recreational by BC Hockey and the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association. There are no formal assessments or tryouts for U7 or UU9, and these groups usually begin in the first or second week of September. At the U11 & U11 Development level, players may try out for "U11 Development" teams (similar to a represenative team), or they may play at the normal recreational level.
Representative teams are formed at the U13, U15, and U18 levels, with tryouts typically starting around the Labour Day weekend. Each year, PMHA aims to create "A" and "B" representative teams, although there are times when tryout numbers are not sufficient to form a "B" team.
Assessments for U11, U13, U15, and U18 recreational teams normally start after Labour Day. Following these assessments, Divsional Managers work with coaches to create teams that are as equally balanced as possible. Typically, most divisions will have two or three recreational teams.
