Want to be a Referee or linesperson?

Referees and Linespersons are on the ice to ensure the safety of all participants and make sure that play is fair. Without Referees and Linespersons, we would not be able to run games. If you are interested in becoming a Referee or Linesperson, please read all of the information on this page and follow the links below to the BC Hockey Website for everything you need to know about getting certified to officiate minor hockey games at PMHA

Referees are always needed. If you are 12 or older, and you want to learn about available refereeing opportunities, please contact PMHA's Referee in Chief.

Rates of pay vary depending on the level of play. Peninsula Minor Hockey also pays for training, and for the basic gear that new referees need to get started.

The benefits:

  • You get more immersed in the game, more time in your skates and a better understandings of the rules
  • You can set your own schedule
  • You gain resume skills: Professional conduct, handling tough situations in real-time, applying rules and procedures in dynamic environments
  • You earn some cash
  • You are giving back to the game, now and in the future to enable the next generation of hockey players

Certification

For information about certification for new and returnings officials go to the website of BC Hockey: CLICK HERE.

New Officials

PMHA is responsible for New Officials Clinics for persons who have never been certified by Hockey Canada before. A New Officials Clinic is normally conducted near the end of September each season. Get in touch with the Referee In Chief for PMHA at refereeinchief@pmha.bc.ca for more information.

Note that new officials need to be 12 years of age by December 31 of the current season in order to officiate games this season.

Returning Officials

All returning Officials need to register and take a BC Hockey Clinic. These clinics can be found on Hockey Canada’s Registry site at: https://register.hockeycanada.ca/home

You need a Spordle account to access this site. Hit the Login button and follow the directions to establish an account if you do not already have one.

Returning officials need to complete a clinic every year by December 31 in order to maintain their credentials and officiate games. You can continue to officiate, if you certified last year, right up to December 31 of this year.

There are several parts to Certification and all the information you need is on the BC Hockey site at:

https://www.bchockey.net/officials/getting-started/recertification

Note that officials 18 years old and older must get a Criminal Record Check (CRC) done every three years. You will not be able to register unless you have a current CRC on file.

If you have any difficulties with registration or the websites, please contact BC Hockey directly as PMHA has no access or ability to change anything with the on line system.
